Computer Services supports any of the Cisco-Aironet client adapters as the university standard and recommends them as our adapter of choice.

Any vendor's wireless adapter should work on campus if it uses the IEEE 802.11b standard, or the RFC1042 standard. Cards tested include Linksys, Dell TrueMobile, Orinoco, D-Link,  Netgear, and 3-Com.

Cisco has also implemented a compatibility program that ensures non Cisco cards will be compatible with our Cisco AP's.  Look for when you purchase your wireless card to be sure it will work on campus.

Card speed (2mb/s, 11mb/s, etc.) does not matter for connectivity on campus. Most cards will automatically select the best speed that can be used.  At this time 802.11b supports max speeds of 11mb/s, and is supported in all areas on campus where wireless is available.

802.11g will support speeds up to 54mb/s, and may be implemented around campus once it's available and as the budget permits.  Please note that an 802.11g card bought for a workstation will work with our 802.11b Access Points, but it will only run at a max speed of 11mb/s.  As the 802.11g AP's are deployed, you will be able to take advantage of faster wireless speeds.

Wireless cards can be purchased by students and staff at the UCF Computer Store.
