Windows 98 VPN Setup Guide

First you will need to verify that your system has the necessary network protocols installed to run a VPN session.  Windows 98 requires that you install the Microsoft VPN Adapter along with Dial-Up Networking in order to use a VPN connection.  To check these settings, open your Control Panels folder, and find the Network control panel.

The Network control panel will display a list of adapters and protocols installed on your system.  If you do not see the Microsoft VPN Adapter and Dial-Up Networking Adapter listed, you will need to install them.  Click the Add... button to select the adapters that are missing.

Select Adapter and then click the Add... button.

Select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers and then select Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter from the list of Network Adapters.  Click OK to complete the selection.  Your computer may ask you for a Windows 98 setup CD and then prompt you to restart the system.

Once you have the VPN Adapter installed, you are ready to create a new VPN connection.  Open the Network and Dial-up Connections folder under My Computer.  Double-click the icon for Make New Connection.

Enter a name your your VPN connection, such as "My VPN" or "UCF VPN".  Under the "Select a device:" menu, click the option for Microsoft VPN Adapter.  Click Next.

Enter the host name for the UCF VPN server, vpn3030.ucf.edu, then click Next.

Click Finish.

Your PC will now display an icon for the VPN connection in the Dial-Up Networking Folder.  Right-click the VPN icon, and select Properties.

Click the tab labeled Server Types.

Under the Server Types tab, deselect the check boxes for NetBEUI and  IPX/SPX Compatible under the Allowed network protocols section.  Then click the button labeled TCP/IP Settings...

If you need to make changes to the default gateway settings, you can do so with the check box at the bottom of the TCP/IP Settings window.  Then click OK to close each of the configuration windows.

To open your VPN connection, double-click the VPN icon.

In the Connect To window, enter your Network ID (NID) and the VPN password you entered on the My VPN web page, then click the Connect button.

The PC will then initiate the connection to the UCF VPN server:

Once the connection has been established, an icon will appear in the system tray to display the status of your VPN connection.  For details about the connection, right-click the icon and select Status.

The status window will display information about your VPN connection, including encryption levels, bytes of data sent and received, and the duration of the session.  When you are ready to disconnect or "end" the VPN session, click the Disconnect button.
