UCF currently operates three root name servers for the ucf.edu domain. The UCF root DNS server addresses are:
The Network Operations Center recommends that all network systems be configured to use these servers for DNS resolution.
Basic instructions for configuring all three DNS servers in Windows are provided below. Instructions for departments operating their own DNS servers are provided after the basic instructions.
Basic DNS Configuration Instructions for Windows XP Open your computer’s control panels and navigate to the Network Connections folder. Double-click the icon for Local Area Connection to display the Status window below.
Click on Properties to open the Local Area Connection Properties window. Under “This connection uses the following items:” scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Click to select Internet Protocol and then click Properties. The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window will be displayed. On the lower half of the control panel, click the button labeled “Use the following DNS servers addresses:”. In the “Preferred DNS Server” field, enter 10.171.12.5. In the “Alternate DNS Server” field, enter 10.171.12.37. After both addresses have been entered, click the Advanced… button. The Advanced TCP/IP Settings window should be displayed. Click the tab labeled DNS at the top of the window. The DNS tab should be displayed.
The section labeled “DNS serer addresses, in order of use” should list the first two DNS servers, 10.171.12.5 and 10.171.12.37. Click the Add… button. The TCP/IP DNS Server window will be displayed.
In the section labeled “DNS server”, enter the address of the third root DNS server, 10.171.12.69. Click Add to complete the entry and close the window.
The Advanced TCP/IP Settings should now list all three root DNS server addresses in the section labeled “DNS server addresses, in order of use”. Click OK to close Advanced TCP/IP Settings. Click OK to close Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties. Click OK to close Local Area Connection Properties. Click Close to close Local Area Connection Status.
Departmental DNS Configuration Instructions for Windows XP Open your computer’s control panels and navigate to the Network Connections folder. Double-click the icon for Local Area Connection to display the Status window below. Click on Properties to open the Local Area Connection Properties window.

In the “Preferred DNS Server” field, you should see your department’s primary DNS server. In this example, we use 192.168.1.10. In the “Alternate DNS Server” field, you should see your department’s secondary DNS server. In this example, we use 192.168.1.11. If both addresses have been entered, click the Advanced… button. The Advanced TCP/IP Settings window should be displayed. Click the tab labeled DNS at the top of the window. The DNS tab should be displayed.
The section labeled “DNS serer addresses, in order of use” should list only the departmental DNS servers, in this example they are 192.168.1.10 and 192.168.1.11. Click the Add… button. The TCP/IP DNS Server window will be displayed.
In the section labeled “DNS server”, enter the address of the first root DNS server, 10.171.12.5. Click Add to complete the entry and close the window.
In the section labeled “DNS server”, enter the address of the second root DNS server, 10.171.12.37. Click Add to complete the entry and close the window.
In the section labeled “DNS server”, enter the address of the third root DNS server, 10.171.12.69. Click Add to complete the entry and close the window. The Advanced TCP/IP Settings should now list the departmental DNS servers as well as all three UCF root DNS server addresses in the section labeled “DNS server addresses, in order of use”. Click OK to close Advanced TCP/IP Settings. Click OK to close Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties. Click OK to close Local Area Connection Properties. Click Close to close Local Area Connection Status. |
